‘Junk Food’ made healthy

By Patricia May P. Catan

YES, healthy junk food exists and now you don’t have to feel so guilty of indulging too much on your favorite food because there are healthier alternatives that taste just as better. Toniq Juice Bar who won Best Juice Bar in the latest Best of Cebu serves these healthy options and here are our top five favorites.

Veggie Burger

Veggie Burger

Substitute your usual greasy meat burger with a veggie burger that is sure to taste just as good but packed with all the good nutrients you actually need. A veggie burger does not use meat for its patty but instead use ingredients like beans, fungi or mycoprotein and finished with fresh tomatoes and lettuce then drizzled with a special (healthy) sauce depending on the recipe.

Vegan Shawarma

Vegan Shawarma

A traditional shawarma recipe is served with meat, veggies and sauce wrapped in a pita bread. But for a vegan shawarma, it’s minus the meat of course and served with vegan sources that may include either chickpeas, tofu, peas, and soy among many others. For this kind of shawarma, there’s no frying and heavy sauces, which makes it the perfect healthy alternative for meat!

Vegetarian Sisig

Vegetarian Sisig

We all know pork sisig contains a lot of cholesterol but we can’t help but devour no matter how sinful. Luckily though there’s now an alternative to this which is the vegetarian sisig made up of soya veggie meat with tofu and other natural herbs and spices. Your taste buds will surprise you once you get a taste of the vegetarian sisig since a lot claim that it tastes pretty good despite it being vegan.

Spicy Mushroom Pizza

Spicy Mushroom Pizza

It is still debatable whether pineapples really pass as pizza toppings but one thing is for sure, mushrooms belong with pizzas too. While some pizza flavors already have mushrooms and other meat as toppings, this pizza solely has mushrooms and some cheese and maybe chili flakes for added spice.

Soba Aglio E Olio

Soba Aglio E Olio

This Japanese noodle dish made from buckwheat flour is a healthier choice for when you’re craving for pasta. Aside from the soba noodles, this pasta also comes with roasted garlic, malunggay and nori. The soba aglio e olio is simple yet it bursts with so much flavor that allows you to indulge minus the guilt.
