Law creating Department of Migrant Workers signed

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte signed on Thursday, December 30, a law creating the Department of Migrant Workers.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go said earlier that the creation and establishment of the Department of Migrant Workers is one of the President’s priorities.

Duterte, in March, certified the Department of Migrant Workers Act as urgent.

Malacañang said the signing of the law is expected to benefit about 2.2 million Filipinos abroad, based on the 2019 Survey on Overseas Filipinos released in 2020 by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

In his speech Thursday, Duterte said the establishment of the Department of Migrant Workers “happens on the celebration of Rizal Day,” thus he urged the Filipino people to honor not only the “exceptional love for the country of Dr. Jose Rizal, but also the patriotism, excellence and courage of our modern-day heroes, including the overseas Filipinos.”

He vowed to continue to serve the Filipino people by giving them “an honest and responsive government that they deserve.” (LMY)
