The best way I can serve the Filipino!

By Mike Grogan

TWO years ago, I arrived in the Philippines determined to be successful. For the five years prior to that, I worked in America and Africa as a Leadership Trainer. I was fortunate enough to specialize in something called “Lean Management,” an approach to business improvement that focuses on creating success habits where everyone is improving by one percent every day. I was convinced that this management expertise would be my single greatest contribution to Philippines. I was wrong.

Once I started to travel across the country I started noticing a concerning pattern on what the greatest challenge the Filipinos were facing. I realized this country has everything it needs to become a first world nation in our lifetime. The only thing holding back every single Filipino is their own false limiting beliefs. I have been blessed to have met so many amazing Pinoys that are far more talented than me, but the core problem is that so many of them didn’t believe in themselves. They didn’t believe that they were worthy or powerful to achieve great things. This is the problem I am now committed to solving.

Even though I still do Management and Leadership trainings for some of the most progressive companies in the Philippines, today I spend most of my time delivering inspirational speeches on why I believe in the Filipino Dream and why the Philippines will change the world. I finally discovered that these motivational talks are how I can be of greatest service to this great country. This is my greatest contribution to the Philippines.

When I speak, most of the audiences are still shocked to see me. They are shocked that a foreigner cares so much and believes so much in the potential of this country. At every speaking engagement, I get asked why I am so passionate about serving the Filipino. My answer is that I love this country. Not because of the sandy beaches, breathtaking mountains or delicious food, but because of the Filipino people. The Filipino has made me a better person. I really believe that I will become the best version of myself here in the Philippines.

I have now spoken to hundreds of organizations all across the Visayas, Mindanao and Luzon — to businesses, public servants and students. There is so much positive change happening across the nation. This really is the greatest time in history to be in the Philippines. It is my firm belief that we will see a First World Philippines in our lifetime. I am not leaving until we see that day. My team and I will progress every day with our mission of helping more and more Pinoys believe in the Filipino Dream.

“Why does it take a foreigner to tell us this?” — This is a common question I get asked after I deliver our motivational talks. The answer lies is the story of the butterfly. The butterfly cannot see its wings. It cannot see how truly beautiful it is. I feel that this is also the story of the Filipino. Sometimes it needs an outsider (in this case a foreigner) to remind the Filipino how beautiful they are, how extraordinary they are and how every Filipino is born to become world class. The greatest days of the Filipino people are ahead. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!
