Fortune foretold

Readers share their fortune cookie wishlist

By Cassandra C. Poculan

NUGGETS of wisdom enclosed in one crispy cookie? Count us in. But really, it’s almost preposterous to think that these centuries-old edible and enigmatic fortune tellers are of Japanese origin and are offered in Chinese restaurants the world over except in China. Fortune cookies can come with all types of messages, some of which lean more towards poetic than prophetic. Here’s what these readers would like to find in theirs.

“‘If it’s still on your mind, then it is worth taking the risk.’ This year, I’d like to do more things that are out of my comfort zone. I always had this gut feeling that I should take the risk and just do it, but there was always something holding me back, like fear of the unknown. But this year will be the year that I take more risks.”

Darianne Bartiana, 23
Corporate Communications Graduate
St. Theresa’s College

“’Stay patient and trust the journey.’ This is what I want to read from my fortune cookie this year. I’m still in my early 20’s but I think life has a funny way of giving me all these challenges. Yes we all plan to be successful one day – maybe some have even written a timeline but not everything is sketched your way. I’ve come to realize that the process is rough and a struggle but I’m hoping that it will get me to where I deserve to be.”

Alfonso Montenegro, 24
Sales Account Manager/The Henry Hotel
Indoor Cycling Instructor/Zink

“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.”

Apple Cale, 27
Co-founder
The Junkie

“I’m honestly in for whatever good fortune this year may bring! Crossing my fingers that 2019 will be another year of breakthroughs for our passion project The Junkie. To more DIY budget-friendly party styling!”

Justein Redoble, 25
College Professor
Law Student

“I wish to read a future filled with peace and love. With all that’s happening in the country right now, to be reassured of the peace and the love ahead is really what relieves me of the anxiety that each day gives. And really, I know there’s no need to read it from a fortune cookie, but a little reminder goes a long way!”
