Weekend readers share what the new study season means to them

By Cassandra C. Poculan

IT’S time to switch from vacation mode to school mode. Saying goodbye to summer sun and fun does not exactly thrill everyone but school supplies shopping and saying hello to friends both old and new surely do. With this fresh start, you actually get another chance to set and accomplish new goals, and work on those classes you struggled in last year. Whether you dread or are excited about plotting your new schedule, joining new clubs and extracurricular activities, acing those exams, and waking up to the sound of your alarm (and snoozing it for the nth time), there is a different kind of rush brought about by the onset of another academic year. Here are some readers and their thoughts on school.

Jan Alcarez, 26
Fourth Year/Juris Doctor
University of Cebu-Banilad Campus

“I look forward to seeing my friends again. Since I am a working student, I don’t get a chance to spend time with my classmates except during class hours. Law school is tough and I think it’s important to build strong friendships since these people will be your moral support, cheerleaders and study buddies. It’s good to know that you have people who have your back through your journey to the legal profession.”

Kyla Dolaota, 16
Grade 11/STEM
Cebu Doctors’ University

“This year, I am looking forward to learning new things in a new environment. I am also looking forward to creating new memories and participating in the activities my new school has to offer. I am so excited to meet new people and be able to connect with them. From these, I’ll be able to gain some experiences that would help me grow and become a better person.”

Anna Tablada, 24
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
North Metropolitan TAFE WA

“I never really thought that I would study again, let alone in another country. So I am a bit anxious knowing that their education system is far different from what I am used to. Nevertheless, I’m excited to learn new things and to immerse in another culture — to meet new friends with different nationalities from all over the world.”

Reynand Ortida, 26
Third Year/Bachelor of Laws (LL.B)
University of Cebu-College of Law

“For the upcoming school year, I am looking forward to the end of the semester (*wink). Seriously though, I am looking forward to being with my old friends again and I am equally excited to meet new friends. It makes me excited thinking that a renewed opportunity to learn and acquire new knowledge has come. I am thrilled to study and learn with my core group again knowing that through whatever kinds of pressure we are facing, we always find ways to lighten the mood and just enjoy. School is hard, but if you have great friends you won’t mind hardships at all.”

Kyle Andaya, 17
Grade 11/STEM
Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion

“Every academic year is our chance to be better and more aware of our society through education. It marks new beginnings and possibilities to improve on things that have been done in the past school year. With this, I look forward to new experiences and being able to open my mind to new realizations. I also look forward to meeting new friends, creating a new family and being able to reconnect with old ones.”
