UBE Gallery opened a very special show for an exceptional artist last Aug. 19. In Situ: Abstracting Identity and Migration (A Premier Collection Series), a solo exhibit by Sio Montera, was a homecoming of sorts for the teacher-turned-student. To make things even more special, it was also his birthday. Family, friends, art enthusiasts, and friends from the media came out to support the master abstractionist, Sio Montera.
“Sio” to friends and colleagues, Dennis E. Montera is a prolific artist and a conscientious educator. As an artist, Sio has mounted multiple solo shows on abstract art. He obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004 at the College of Fine Arts in UP Diliman. As an educator, Sio has rendered as associate professor of the Fine Arts program in UP Cebu.
Passionate in community art development as the past president of the Pusod Cebu Visual Artists Inc. and as a founding member of the Creative Cebu Council Inc., he is the current vice head of the Committee on Visual Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. He is also in Qube’s featured roster of curator-artists this season.
In pursuit of higher learning, Sio ventured to Taiwan to experience, challenge, and develop the concept of creative industries. While immersing in a new culture and experiencing an interesting way of life, he created an abstract narrative of his journey. Sio’s new style of painting picks up from where he left off – the collection exhibited as “One Man Sio” in Qube Gallery last June 2014. To date, abstracting his identity and migration was magnified in In Situ. The exhibit ran last Aug. 19 to Sept. 7 at Qube Gallery in Crossroads, Banilad, Cebu City.
