Typhoon Odette devastates over 24,000 houses in Consolacion, Cebu

THOUSANDS of houses in Consolacion town in northern Cebu were devastated by Typhoon Odette (Rai) that hit Cebu on the night of December 16, 2021.

Nearly 24,000 homes were destroyed by the typhoon. Of which, 22,424 were damaged while 1,527 were destroyed.

However, Engineer Danny Capangpangan, chief of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, did not give an estimate to the damage wrought in Consolacion by Typhoon Odette.

Agriculture in the town was also devastated by Typhoon Odette.

Not only were houses damaged by Hurricane Odette, it was also involved in agriculture.

Cornelia Valle, chief of the Municipal Agriculture Office, said P8 million was the estimate of agricultural damage brought about by the typhoon. She said poultry farms, piggeries and fisheries were destroyed.

Prices of pork, chicken and fish are expected to rise, but the Municipality is closely monitoring prices to ensure no abuse from businesspersons.

The price of drinking water, which has become scarce after Typhoon Odette, is being monitored by the Local Price Monitoring Council as ordered by Mayor Joannes Alegado.

Consolacion is one of the areas in Metro Cebu that was hit hard by the typhoon.

Boats were wrecked on the beaches and a tugboat sank in Barangay Tayud during the onslaught of Typhoon Odette.

It was reported that there were six crew members onboard the tugboat mv Ida, but only two were retrieved by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Cebu so far.

PCG Cebu Captain Alvin Dagalea said on Monday, December 27, said the four crew members of mv Ida were still missing.

The PCG Cebu still has no identities of the two crew members.

The PCG Cebu’s updated report states that 271 ships ran aground, 12 capsized and 12 sank during Typhoon Odette’s onslaught. (REV / KAL)
