VEGETARIANISM and veganism have taken over our social media feed, and some experts have claimed that giving up meat reduces a far greater carbon footprint than buying an electric car ever will. Studies also suggest that meat alters your gut microbiome, so swearing by a plant-based diet could mean saving your health and the environment. But what about the die-hard carnivores? Surely there’s some bacon of hope for them, yes? We ask readers what their thoughts are on walking away from the pure primal pleasure of consuming meat.

Would I give up meat? Well I’ve thought about giving up meat for a few years now for health reasons. I’m allergic to pork you see, and living in Cebu where the lechon is delicious and is pretty much a staple in any celebration, it was really hard for me to give up pork but I had to so I guess anything is possible. I’ve tried going vegetarian but it didn’t last long then I tried being a pescatarian instead which lasted longer. Now I only have meat from time to time so I guess the answer is, I don’t know if I could give up meat totally but I do try to be on a healthier and more plant-based diet as much as possible.

I would not give up meat. I believe that all kinds of food are good and don’t have any bad effect to one’s body if taken in moderation. All kinds of food have nutrients that are essential to the body. Therefore I will eat everything I want in a responsible manner knowing that too much of anything is a bad thing.

I am willing to give up pork and meat. I find myself enjoying lots of meat lately and I can see that there are quite bad effects of consuming them. I gain a lot of weight and even my uric acid levels are on spike. So for a change, I would love to try not to eat meat especially beef and pork at all cost.

Definitely not. Even if people say “give up meat to save the planet,” there are a lot of other changes you can make in your life that will have a positive impact especially if giving up meat isn’t for you. Giving up meat is like giving up on the good life, non-negotiable and boring.
