WHEN on a holiday, taking photos are not just important but essential. These still images we capture become priceless souvenirs of precious moments made with loved ones, which we gladly look back on in the future. But what if you could capture your entire vacation in full motion — a mini film of sorts?
Last September 27, Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa, Cebu introduced a new dimension to the #HappyToBeachHere experience as it launched Shangri-La Mactan Stories, a groundbreaking partnership with Garmin Philippines. This is the first time a resort has partnered with a technology company that manufactures action cameras, making Shangri-La Mactan the very first Garmin-enabled resort in the world. The first batch of Garmin action cameras were delivered via helicopter to the resort by General Manager René Egle and representatives from Garmin Philippines.
With the new Shangri-La Mactan Stories campaign, guests can now borrow a Garmin VIRB action camera from the resort absolutely free of charge to use during the entire duration of their stay. The resort has 10 units to lend to guests on a first-come, first-served basis. There are also steel camera holders strategically placed in over 30 locations around the resort for guests to mount the Garmin VIRB on and take photos and videos with the best angles and views. Upon check-in, simply request for the Garmin VIRB and you will be given the unit along with a booklet containing the terms and conditions and the map of the holders’ locations. The only thing the guests need to provide themselves is an SD card to insert into the action camera.
As an incentive for guests, Shangri-La Mactan adds stakes to the experience: The three best videos — based on three themes: Inspirational, Action and Out-of-the-Box — will be awarded the Shangri-La Mactan Stories Award next year in September. Winners will be selected from all the videos uploaded online with the resort’s geotag and the hashtag #ShangriLaMactanxGarmin. “We see it as an opportunity to create and push for creativity,” said Egle. Prizes include Garmin action cameras and accommodations in not just Shangri-La Mactan but in Shangri-La properties in Tokyo, Paris and Maldives as well — flights included.
To put together all the photos and clips guest capture during their stay, there’s an editing station at the Entertainment Zone with trained staff to assist guests in sewing all of it together into a beautiful vacation video. In return for using the Garmin VIRB, the resort gets a copy of the final output to upload and share on the website.
The Garmin VIRB is a lightweight action camera that is well-protected with its own waterproof case. Key features include a high sensitivity microphone, 3-axis image stabilization, built-in sensors, GPS capture data and voice control. Garmin products also allow quick social sharing such as live streaming on YouTube and Facebook.
As part of a retail agreement, Garmin products will be available in shops around the resort. On the same day of the partnership’s official launch, Garmin PH also introduced the latest models from its watch collection, which include the Garmin Descent, the first and only dive watch equipped with GPS and complete multi-sport features; and the Approach S60, a full-color golf watch that integrates critical information and maps of over 40,000 golf courses worldwide.
“We cannot think of a better partner than Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa. The resort has so much to offer, mirroring Garmin’s wide range of multi-sport and adventure products that enable guests to capture priceless moments during their stay,” said Garmin Philippines president Ryan Tan.
