Five ways to keep your pets happy and healthy amid the summer heat

By Chelzee Salera

SUMMER weather is the perfect season to get a tan, but for dogs, the humidity and heat can be quite oppressive and even dangerous. Karen Arriesgado, who runs Puffy Paws Heaven Pet Salon, Spa and Gym with husband Donnie Gan, says that with this kind of hot weather, dogs need extra care and attention. She offers some tips to keep dogs happy and relaxed this summer.

1. Give your dogs a trim especially for breeds that are hairy.

“Here at Puffy Paws, we give at least two to three hours of styling for one dog to make sure that the dog is cleaned thoroughly. For summer the owners must allocate budget for once a month grooming to at least freshen up their haircuts because of the hot season. Not only would it be healthy and hygienic, it would also be trendy and fashionable to pick a hair style for the dog’s summer fashion.

2. Watch out for hot spots on your dog.

Dogs have these hot spots, inflamed, infected and itchy areas that if not taken care of will affect different parts of the skin. “In the Philppines it is usually hot so that’s what owners should take notice of because it’s very humid,” Karen said. “It is also very ideal for dogs to take a bath at least twice a week.”

3. Pick the right dog attire, crates and bags for summer getaways.

“Pick cute dog swimsuits and dog accessories to match the stylish hairstyles of their pets for summer getaways. For these kinds of trips travel crates and travel bags will also be necessary,” Karen says. She adds that Puffy Paws Heaven, which is located at Insular Square on JP Rizal St. in Mandaue City, has travel bags for dogs, and approved travel crates for airplanes. “There are only a few approved kinds of cages or crates that are allowed by airlines because of certain dimensions that need to be followed so you may bring your dogs with you on the plane.”

4. Avoid traveling by plane with your pet dogs

Karen points out that plane rides can be uncomfortable for your pets. “The dogs are going to be placed in the baggage area in the back of the plane, which would mean they will be placed near the engine area. A dog’s hearing is ten times greater than that of a human, so it’s very painful for their eardrums. Second, they have certain fears and it will not be healthy to leave them alone in the dark,” she adds.

“Other countries have airlines that allow dogs to sit with you but we don’t have that here in the Philippines,” Karen says, so a better option when traveling is to take a boat, many of which allow pets on board. Still, she advices it would be better not to bring your dogs when you travel.

5. Travelers should consider pet hotels

Pet hotels are a good option for traveling pet owners, especially if you don’t have anyone to take care of your pets while you’re gone. “People who are traveling out of the country, going to the provinces, or making a trip to the beach can leave their pets in pet hotels,” Karen suggests.

Pet hotels offer suites or rooms for dogs with unlimited supply of dog food and well-trained nannies to play with and check on them every time.

“If you leave your dogs with us for a daycare or for a hotel, the dogs are free to move around the area since the area is big and then we have these facilities where they can climb and play with the yayas (nannies), that is the gym and daycare aspect of Puffy Paws,” added Karen.
