Get ready to shake and bake

FACT: if you don’t know anybody in your family/group of friends or acquaintances who has a massive sweet tooth, then it is probably you. Also a fact: If you live with or know someone who has a sweet tooth, chances are you feed them too much sugar.

In my case, I fall in with the latter group. I don’t have a massive sweet tooth, but there are people in my life who have a hard time eating food that isn’t sweet. It’s almost comical to see how their faces twist into disgust when they have to skip dessert or eat a snack that isn’t frosted in icing. Take my friend C for example. He is rarely found without a hard candy rolling around in his mouth and he actually gets upset if he can’t get into his stash of sweets.

This week, take a walk on the sweet side through these three apps. They collect the best of the Internet’s dessert recipes and make it easier for you to enable the sweet teeth (sweet tooths?) in your life.

Chocolate-iconApp name: Wilton Cake Ideas & More

App developer: Wilton Brands Inc.

Available on: iTunes, Google Play

Easy to use: Wilton is a confectionary and cake company based in the US and they specialise in novelty cakes and creations. This app collects recipes for all kinds of sweet treats, and has videos for you to follow if written instructions aren’t your thing.

Overall comment: I appreciate that the app is easy to use and navigate for the less tech-savvy bakers amongst us. Some of the ingredients listed on the app may not be available in Cebu, but they are all easily replaced with local goods. That aside, the recipes here are beautifully presented, and are a wonderful source of inspiration for your next baking creation. Four clicks out of five.

App developer: App Cookies

Available on: iTunes

Easy to use: This app is ridiculously easy to use, my cat could use it. I love how the recipes, though all made of chocolate, are divided into specific kinds of desserts. There are also options to “favourite” and “share” the recipes you like, something that people like my mom will appreciate.

Overall comment: I could lose myself in this app, there is so much to explore and try out! Chocolate is, and will always be, my first love. I love the different ways you can have chocolate, like mousse and tarts and pies. And best of all, there is a chocolate drinks section, if you like a bit of liqueur with your dessert. A very enthusiastic four clicks out of five.

Wilton-iconApp name: Cookies Recipes and Biscuits

App developer: App Cookies

Available on: iTunes, Google Play

Easy to use: While it looks and behaves similar to the chocolate recipe app, the main difference between the two is that one deals in chocolate, and the other deals in biscuits and cookies. While you could lose yourself in this one too, I find that the recipes lack the overall appeal of the first one.

Overall comment: There’s a reason why biscuits are a picnic staple. They’re easy to make, easy to transport and don’t need a plate to eat from. They’re good for dunking into your tea, and portion control is easier this way. For the real biscuit enthusiast, this app would be good for experimenting with. Three clicks out of five.
