HAVING all your photos stored in an external hard disk, we rarely realize that there’s a lot of interesting landscape or portraits that are long forgotten. There are some things you can do to bring those photos back to life and maybe offer it as gifts.

Before we go into that, let’s talk about the different printing processes available for you to choose from. Some photographers don’t print their photos anymore because of the high printing cost. True, printing is expensive unless you know your alternatives.

The most common way to print your photos is to have it printed in a photo lab. These are the ones you see in malls. The printing is done using a photo paper and processed using chemicals. This is the same technology used before, but instead of using negative film, digital image are used in exposing the image on to the photo paper.

Photo lab prints are by far the best way for you to print your photos for sizes 4R to 8R. It’s cheaper than any digital printing technology and the quality is more than enough. However, if you plan to print bigger sizes, you can choose between inkjet and laser printing.

The advancement of laser printing technology has improved so much in the past few years that they can now print photos with qualities almost as good as photo paper. The reason why laser printing is still around today is because of the low cost of printing. An A3+ or 12inX18in print would cost between P50-80 pesos. This is the same price if you print 8R or 8inX10in photo lab.

If you are looking for large sizes with excellent quality, 8-color inkjet printing is the way to go. It’s expensive – maybe twice the cost of conventional digital printing – but the quality is beyond your expectations. It has a wider color gamut or saturation and the details are impeccable. Your priceless photo can wow an audience if printed on an 8-color inkjet.

So here are some tips on what to do with those stock photos you have:

Desk or Wall Calendar

You can actually make your own calendar with your landscape or travel photos. This is a perfect gift that would help create a mood in someone’s office table or home. Make sure to put some details about the photo. It helps make the viewer engaged in your timeless images.

To make it more interesting, you can make a personalized calendar. This is a special calendar with photos of the person or family you are giving the calendar to. Since this is digital printing, you can make one or two copies only per calendar design. I do this to thank my clients at the end of the year.

This is the best way to seal the year’s event in a book. If you’re using a Mac, just launch iPhoto and make a Photobook instantly with your photos. If you have Lightroom both for PC or Mac, you can choose the “Book” module and everything is just click and drag. After finishing your layout, just save it as PDF file and send it to your local print provider.

Keep on shooting everyone!
