PH upsets Thailand in AFC Women’s Asia Cup

THE Philippines logged a huge win in its Group B opening match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup after a 1-0 upset over Thailand on Jan. 21, 2022 at D Y Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India.

Thailand started out strong with a couple of attempts early on.

The Philippines hit the back of the net with a shot by Katrina Guillo but it was waived off by the referee. The match was scoreless at halftime.

The Philippines, however, finally found the back of the net late in the match. Chandler McDaniel scored the winning goal in the 81st minute with a shot from 20 yards away. Thai goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing caught the ball but she fumbled it past the goal line. This was the Philippines’ first win against Thailand in 12 matches.

Thailand came into the match as the favorite. Thailand is ranked 38th in the world, while the Philippines is rated 68th.

In the other Group B match, Australia demolished Indonesia, 18-0.

Australia has three points and leads Group B on goal differential over the Philippines, which is in second place.

The Philippines will be in a tough match against tournament favorite Australia in its next match on Jan. 24, 2022.
