889 new cases, 28 more deaths in Philippines

THE Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday, December 29, 889 more cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) that pushed the country’s total caseload to 2,838,790.

The new cases also pushed the country’s active infections to 10,418 (0.4 percent), of which 536 were asymptomatic, 4,384 were mild, 3,346 were moderate, 1,778 were severe and 374 critical.

The health department said the positivity rate stood at 4.5 percent, based on the 27,615 samples tested last December 27.

There were also 214 new recoveries that brought the total number of people who have recovered from the disease to 2,778,131. This accounts for 97.8 percent of all confirmed infections.

The death toll rose to 51,241 with 28 new mortalities. The case fatality rate stood at 1.80 percent.

The DOH said two laboratories were not operational while another failed to submit data to the Covid-19 Document Repository System last December 27.

Based on the data in the last 14 days, the three laboratories contributed on average 0.4 percent of all samples tested.

The DOH also reported that the top regions with most cases in the last 14 days were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 564 cases (65 percent), followed by Calabarzon with 86 cases (10 percent) and Central Luzon with 53 cases (six percent).

Sixteen duplicates, of which 13 were recoveries, were removed from the total case count, while 25 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths. (LMY)
