Care for some beauty appgrade?

By Meg Rivera

THE end of the academic year heralds mall-wide graduation sales, farewell parties and of course, prom season! I’m watching my sister and her friends go through the anxiety of preparing for their graduation ball; I won’t lie, it’s a hoot. Everyone’s on the hunt for the perfect dress and shoes, but I’ll bet that nobody’s even begun to think of makeup.

There’s a fine line between looking elegant and looking like you broke into your mother’s makeup drawer. You need to think about your skin tone, your features and even things like your undertone. I wonder how in the world Hollywood makeup artists keep it all in mind, especially during awards season! You definitely want to look your very best for prom, and not cringe at the pictures ten years from now.

This week, toss out any notions of sporting a smokey eye to prom out the window. Here are three apps that take the hassle out of deciding what looks work for your dress and for your age. Prom should not be a pain in the neck, so let these apps take some of the worry away for you:

icon-MakeUpApp name: MakeUp

App developer: Modiface

Available on: iTunes, Google Play

Easy to use: It does take a little getting used to, especially with the colour charts but the results are not too bad.

Overall comment: I love makeup, but the trying it on part is the worst! This app takes away the germfest that is the makeup tester and puts a new spin on it. You upload your picture, calibrate it to your features and make your face up using colour swatches from real makeup products. If you like the result, you can buy the product itself through the app. Three clicks out of five.

icon-BeautilishApp name: Beautylish

App developer: Beautylish, Inc

Available on: iTunes, Google Play

Easy to use: Think of it as an interactive catalogue, but with more options to choose from.

Overall comment: I suppose there’s a reason why Beautylish remains one of the most trusted beauty websites on the Internet. This app takes all the best products available, reviews them and allows you to purchase them online. Often, Beautylish will have sales that give out discount codes so it’s worth checking those out as well. Good if you want to splurge a little on a foreign brand, but without paying retail price. Great app design too, it’s very clean and minimalist. Four clicks out of five.

icon-Hair-ColorApp name: Hair Color

App developer: Modiface

Available on: iTunes, Google Play

Easy to use: The calibration part was a little difficult to figure out, but you get there eventually.

Overall comment: It works on the same concept as the MakeUp app, but with hair. The colour choices are limited for the free version, but it’s still a good way to see how you could possibly look if you decided on a new hair colour. I also like how it warns you if a colour might not work on you. Three clicks out of five.
