A road trip to remember

LIVING in Cebu has its perks, especially for people with restless feet. And one of that is you don’t have to wait for Piso fare plane tickets to get somewhere.

PERFECT KOMBI-NATION. It’s amazing what a kombi van and a bunch of artistic, free-spirited wanderers can do. After driving around the island, we came up with this vintage-y, boheme feel photos, which were used as promotional materials for the summer campaign of Susing’s Guitar, a local guitar company that makes hand-crafted guitars and ukuleles. I guess throwing in a kombi into the equation can make anything look 60-ish. We drove the kombi around the island and found a perfect spot.

Having friends who take traveling and adventure-seeking as seriously as I do is a huge blessing.

We just decided one day to hop on a car, bring some props, drive somewhere and take amazing photographs.

TEPEE OR NOT TEPEE: THAT IS THE QUESTION. You don’t need to spend a lot to have memorable photos. All you need is a perfect location, perfect props, and the perfect crazy bunch of people to do crazy stunts with, like setting up a tepee in the middle of nowhere, all of whom would gladly chip in for gas, of course.

We didn’t want it to be just a regular road trip; we wanted it to be a road trip that we wanted to remember for years to come.

And it turned out to be the start of one of the best summers of our lives.

STOP FOR THE SUNRISE. In one of our early morning trips, we passed by this bridge as the sun was rising. As if on cue, our convoy of two cars stopped, sleep-deprived people piled out, and photos were taken. Only when a bus driver screamed bloody murder for blocking the road that we scampered back into the cars and went on our merry way.

So how do you make road trips special?

1. Make friends with the right people. Of course, this may take some time but definitely worth it.

2. Decide — don’t guess — where to go. It may be any place you’ve only heard of or read somewhere. Getting there will be the adventure part.

3. Make sure your friends can handle a camera. Our group has a DSLR and a go pro camera that at least one of us can operate.

4. Look good, travel pretty. It wouldn’t hurt if one of your friends knows a thing or two about make up. Remember, looking great on photos is the whole point.

HOW NOT TO RUIN THE VIEW OF THE RUINS. Your roadtrips might bring you to ruins like these. They make for perfect backdrops.

5. Don’t look just straight ahead. Having a planned destination is a good thing, but don’t let that divert your attention from amazing places you will pass by along the way.

6. Obey your urge to take photos. Lots of them. The more photos you take, the better the chances you’ll get amazing results. Who knows you may not be able to visit that spot again, as your restless feet are always taking you somewhere else. So, don’t feel guilty about being trigger-happy with the cam. Happy clicking!

AN ENDLESS STRETCH OF BLUE.This is what we learned: tiring long drives are always, always rewarded with the most amazing views.

*All this began with a foto shoot one Sunday morning for Susing’s Guitar advertising materials. We ended up meeting every single Sunday after that for road trips, with or without the ukelele as props.

MORNING MADNESS.Just because we hate mornings doesn’t mean we can’t wake up early, drive far north, greet the sunrise on a shore we absolutely have no idea where, and dance like mad to music played from a nearby diskoral.
